Module 4 – How to Create the BtB Practical Vision

Module 7 – How to Create Your BtB KPIs
In Module 7 you’ll learn how to create and apply your “Be the Best” KPIs (key performance indicators). The six key operational KPIs that you apply in any process are –
- Thruput Time (TPT)
- Pipeline Lead Time (PLT)
- Thruput Rate (TPR)
- Overall Asset Effectiveness (OAE)
- Right First Time (RFT) and
- Customer Service Level (CSL).
You’ll learn how you can calculate and report these kpis automatically. And how you can then use them to drive and motivate staff to achieve your practical vision objectives.
Module 8 – How to Get It Right First Time
In Module 8 you’ll learn how to get your processes operating right first time. The main principles you’ll learn are to –
- Establish the correct standards, specification or criteria up front
- Make the process simple and straightforward – hard to get wrong
- Properly apply appropriate root cause analyses when errors arise, and
- Apply fool-proofing to avoid the same errors happening again.
You’ll see how the team apply each of these principles in their company week by week and achieve their right first time objectives. They use some very useful techniques that again you’ll not read in any book, including lots of real life examples.
Module 9 – How to Improve Productivity and Flexibility
In Module 9 you’ll learn how to improve productivity and flexibility in any process. These are the keys to reducing unit costs, becoming more price competitive and increasing profitability.
You’ll learn the two main principles to improving productivity which are –
- Establish the true pace setting sub-process, and
- Ensure that it operates in the most effective way.
You may think that this first principle just reflects the ideas outlined many years ago in “The Goal”. However, you’ll learn very quickly that my approach takes you way beyond these ideas again using techniques that you won’t find in any book.
In the second of these two main principles, you’ll learn how to apply OAE to achieve the highest possible level of productivity. You’ll see examples from batch manufacturing industries such as cpg or pharmaceuticals, from process type industries such as chemicals, and from extended process type industries such as biotech. You’ll also see examples from various service industries.
You’ll see how the Australian project team more than doubles their productivity from exactly the same resources with the same shift pattern. And you can potentially do that too in your world.
Module 10 – How to Synchronise Your Support Functions
In Module 10 you’ll learn how to synchronise support functions with your new practical vision.
You’ll see how I work with the Australian project team week-by-week to synchronise their quality operations as an example.
You can use that same approach with any of the other support functions such as HR, IT, Finance, etc.
Module 11 – How to Plan and Schedule in a BtB Supply Chain
In Module 11 you’ll learn how to plan and schedule both materials and resources in a “Be the Best” supply chain.
You’ll learn how you can match your supply patterns to the four different types of demand pattern – Regular, Variable, Sporadic and Erratic – for tertiary, secondary and primary modes of production.
For tertiary production you’ll learn how to develop business models and use rhythm wheels to get your supply pattern right. You'll also learn how to deal sensibly with low volume products.
For secondary production you’ll learn how to synchronise with tertiary production rhythm wheels. And for primary production how to synchronise with secondary.
You can then use any of these examples to deal with any stand-alone process to achieve similar objectives.
You’ll also learn how to calculate the ideal stock levels at each stage in your supply chain and how to minimise any demand variability that occurs.
In addition, you’ll learn how you can use VMI and APS techniques together with collaborative planning to deliver 100% on time customer service.
You’ll also see how I work with the project team week-by-week to develop their inbound and outbound supply chains so that they can consolidate the benefits from their “Be the Best” program.
Module 12 – How to Improve Responsiveness
In Module 12 you’ll learn how to improve responsiveness to customer demands by minimising pipeline lead times. In this Module you’ll learn how all of the work in the previous six Modules comes together to achieve the responsiveness targets.
In addition you’ll learn how to apply various types of kanban to control material flow. These kanbans could be volume based kanbans, buffer/kanbans, or time-based kanbans, and you’ll learn the circumstances in which each of these should be used with real life examples.
Again you’ll see me working with the project team week-by-week to achieve their thruput time and pipeline lead time goals so that you can do the same in your world.
Module 13 – How to Sustain the Benefits and Roll Out the BtB Program
In Module 13 you’ll learn all of the clever tricks and techniques for sustaining the benefits of the program and ensuring any roll-out of the program is successful.
You’ll learn the key things you need to do before the change, during the change and after the change in order to deliver the benefits from the program.
You’ll also see the actual achievements of the project team in each of their seven milestones, covered in each of the previous Modules, which you can emulate.
Module 14 – How to Create a Process Oriented Organization
In Module 14 you’ll learn how to create a process oriented organization (POO). This is a very different way of managing human resources to further consolidate the benefits from the “Be the Best” program.
